In most cases GoLightly's full suite is less expensive than similar email listserv services. Because of this many associations migrate their listservs to GoLightly. This article describes the steps to move one listserv from another vendor to GoLightly.

Step 1: Create Group for new Email List
You can either create a group using the "Start New Group" tool, or create a group linked to so that the membership of the group is controlled by (see "Admin Tools" > "Group Synchronization").

Step 2: Add listserv recipients
Here are a few of the ways you can populate a group with participants from an existing listserv:
  • After the group has been created, go to "Edit Group Settings" > "Add/Remove Emails". Follow the instructions to create an import csv file with the email addresses of all of the participants. Upload this file using the "Add People by Email Address (or Username)" box.
  • Populate group membership from using "Admin Tools" > "Group Synchronization"

Step 3: Make new listserv subscription settings match your existing listserv
Using the same file you created above to add participants to the group, add a column with the header "delivery". For each email address specify: blank (no change), nomail (participant will not receive emails), mail (receive individual emails), digest (receive all of the messages in a daily digest. Upload a csv of this file in the box labeled "Participant Delivery Settings for this Group's Listserv"

Step 4: Import listserv archives
Most services allow you to export your listserv archives. GoLightly allows you to import an existing email listserv archive in MBOX format. You can find the import form at the bottom of this page for each group you are migrating to: "Edit Group Settings" > "Edit Email List Info"

  • If the email address in the "From" field (in the imported email) is used by a GoLightly profile at the time of the import, the email will be attributed to that person/profile.
  • If there are more than ~500 emails in a single MBOX file you may need to break it up into multiple files.
